Mary Ann DeRaad

Piano

Mary Ann began playing piano as a toddler, loving the sound and feel of the instrument as she copied her Mom and older sister. After decades of performance and hundreds of hours in “teacher training” she’s developed her philosophy that performing and learning are best when it’s “Joyful Work and Serious Fun”.

She earned her Bachelor of Music at The Juilliard School, and Master of Music in Piano Performance at SUNY Stonybrook. Mary Ann has been honored to adjudicate for The Piano Guild and MTNA Special Scholarship events. She is a former member of The Piano Guild, MTNA, and Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity.

Mary Ann was an Adjunct Professor at Meredith College, and a summer institute teacher at MUSICFEST at Kingston, Ontario, where she studied to become a Suzuki teacher with Carole Bigler. Accolades include prizes achieved at International and National Competitions, various scholarships and concerts. While in NC, she performed with members of the faculty at Meredith College as well as North Carolina Central University and for several years she also performed with the Piano Trio “27” in Chapel Hill.

She enjoys creating skills at all levels, in every style – the music you love, whether for playing alone, at home recitals and parties or winning scholarships and competitions.

“Mary Ann has the ability to develop a confident, skilled musician by leveraging the unique talents of an individual in a very fun and approachable manner “ ~ Juliana, an early student, who has known her from the beginning of her teaching career.
